RERI: Serbian stations measured PM2.5 exceedances for an average of 104 days in 2025

RERI published its 2025 air-quality analysis: all 97 Serbian stations with sufficiently reliable data recorded exceedances of the European standard, and PM2.5 exceedances averaged 104 days. The organization notes that the government's own program links air pollution to nearly 10,000 premature deaths per year and criticizes delays in measures on imported vehicles, industrial emissions, and permits for polluters.

Danas carries RERI's 2025 analysis: all 97 Serbian stations with minimally reliable data recorded exceedances of the European standard, and PM2.5 exceedances averaged 104 days, compared with the EU's 2030 target of no more than 18 such days. For PM10 in 2025, Novi Pazar had 127 exceedance days, Valjevo and Prokuplje 120 each, Leskovac 110, Krusevac 105, Vranje 98, and Uzice 91. RERI notes that the government's 2022-2030 air-protection program estimates pollution causes nearly 10,000 premature deaths per year and would still cause 7,373 such deaths in 2030 even if measures are implemented; EEA data attributes a 2023 PM2.5-related premature-death rate in Serbia of 188.3 cases per 100,000 residents over 30. The organization also says it asked six ministries in March and April 2026 about implementation: the trade ministry did not propose aligning imported-vehicle standards with Euro 5 and Euro 6 by the January 2024 and January 2025 deadlines, the construction ministry moved a key emissions rulebook to late 2026, and the environment ministry did not increase staff for industrial-polluter permits or align several large emission sources with the rules.
