Voter-register commission seeks data on 133,134 new citizens

August 5, 2026, 08:04 AMUpdated: August 5, 2026, 08:04 AM

SSP members of the voter-register review commission asked the Interior Ministry for data to check whether people who obtained citizenship and voted in the past five years actually live in Serbia, N1 reports. From 2020 to 2025, 133,134 people acquired citizenship. Demographer Vladimir Nikitović says this fits the long-term average and that the number alone cannot establish a targeted political scheme.

Overall takeaway

The request concerns verification of address data, not a proven irregularity: N1 reports both the applicants’ position and a demographer’s view that the naturalisation total itself is not evidence of a scheme.
